Mario Odyssey Is The First Mario Game Rated Higher Than E

We just don’t know why yet.

Granted, at an E10+ it’s not as though we’ll hear Mario chuckin’ cusses, but Super Mario Odyssey[2] is the first mainline Mario game to receive higher than an ‘Everyone’ rating from the ESRB. As spotted by GoNintendo[3], Mario’s next outing now has a listed rating – however, the ESRB hasn’t yet published its detailed rundown of reasons for the game’s rating, so we don’t know what’s going to freak out the under-10s. While some Mario spin-offs have reached higher, every Mario platformer until now has been an E.

According the ESRB’s ratings guide, an E10+ is likely to contain “more cartoon, fantasy or mild violence, mild language and/or minimal suggestive themes” than your garden variety E. Maybe Mario’s new-found ability to possess and destroy those in his way[4] was deemed just a tiny bit too much? We’ll likely find out a few weeks prior to the game’s release on Nintendo Switch this October 27 (i.e. the best day for pop culture in 2017[5]).
