Motorola Moto G6 specs, news and release date: Everything we know so far

The G5 and G5 Plus were two of our favourite budget phones in 2017, and now thanks to leaks, the G6, G6 Plus and even G6 Play look set to take the budget crown once again. We’re expecting these handsets to surface soon and we might just see the Moto X5 as well…

Motorola G6 release date and price

  • Expected launch in late April or early May

We were expecting the new Motorola devices to be unveiled at Mobile World Congress (MWC) in late February but it didn’t happen. It is probable that there will now be a separate Motorola event in late April, with a G6 release date in early May.

We’d always expect budget prices for the G6 series and Droid Life agrees, saying the G6 and G6 Plus will cost between £240 and £330, but hasn’t given an estimated price for the G6 Play. In the UK, the Moto G5 costs around GBP140 SIM-free currently so expect a price point around that, possibly GBP149.

Motorola G6 models and name

  • Three devices expected
  • Moto G6, G6 Play and G6 Plus

We were expecting Motorola – now owned by Lenovo – to replace the Moto G5 this year and, of course, the logical name is Moto G6. The real question is whether we’ll get one, two or three phones in the G6 range.

Evan Blass, often a reliable source for leaks, said in November 2017 that the Play name would return to Motorola’s phone lineup. Subsequently, Droid Life obtained images of all three devices although does say they’re unverified at the moment. The most obvious change from the G5 smartphones is the addition of a dual-lens rear camera for the G6 and G6 Plus, both of which protrude from the back panel in a similar way to the Moto X4.

While not confirmed right now, Droid Life says both cameras will comprise 12-megapixel and 5-megapixel lenses and both will get a 16-megapixel camera on the front. The Moto G6 Play gets a single-lens camera instead, but we don’t yet know the megapixel count.

Motorola G6 specs and camera

  • Probably Snapdragon 450
  • G6 Play will have a bigger battery

We’re expecting these phones to be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 450 and to boast two variants; one with 3GB ram and 32GB storage, and a second with 4GB/64GB. Screen sizes are a little mysterious, but the standard G6 screen could be as big as 5.7-inches with a mid-range 1,080 x 2,160 resolution. The Play will get the same display while the G6 Plus will get a larger 5.93-inch Full HD screen.

Motorola usually reserves the “Play” brand for phones with a long battery life. The G6 Play, for instance, is expected to have a 4,000mAh battery, as well as a Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 and 5.7-inch (2:1-aspect and 1,440 x 720-pixel) display. We’re expecting a 3,000mAh battery inside the standard G6.

As you can see in this leaked image, it has a Moto X4-like design, slimmer bezels, and a fingerprint reader to the back of the phone beneath the camera.

It has also now been spotted passing through the Chinese regulatory authority, TENAA (China’s version of the FCC in the US). The filing reveals some more images of the Moto G6 and some of the specs. It has the model number XT1925-10 and features a 5.7-inch display and 3,000mAh battery, which marry up with other leaks.

We expect the phone will be based around Android 8.0 Oreo and have a 16-megapixel camera, although some other spec leaks suggest a 12 megapixel unit will be used. There are a few conflicting reports about this. Unfortunately, based on these images, it looks like it will have a Micro USB port on the bottom instead of USB-C.

However, the phone will have a headphone jack, so that’s cool.

Motorola is clearly targeting the mid-level market with this smartphone. The G6 and G6 Plus will have fingerprint scanners embedded in the front-mounted home button while the G6 Play’s will move to the back, in a similar fashion the recently leaked E5. All three phones will have 18:9 aspect ratio displays.

The only spec listed for the G6 Play is the battery, which is said to come in a mammoth 4,000mAh, while the G6 and G6 Plus will get 3,000mAh and 3,200mAh units respectively.

The G6 Plus has been subject to another leak, but this time it’s a real-life image of the phone that’s leaked, presumably from the production line. The images were uploaded to Reddit and they certainly line up with the images leaked to Droid Life, including an 18:9 display with slim bezels and a home button/fingerprint scanner at the bottom.

The photos are a little blurry, and they claim to be of a pre-production model of the G6 Plus, so the design may change before the final production model is released. So, as with any leak it’s obviously worth taking them with a pinch of salt for now.
