THAT Deadpool 2 Cameo Was Shot on a Different Movie's Set

The screenwriters spill the beans.

Warning! Full Deadpool 2 SPOILERS below! The first Deadpool movie had a gag about how the X-Mansion was suspiciously devoid of any X-Men, almost as if studio 20th Century Fox wouldn’t allow them to use any of the characters — or the movie couldn’t afford any of those cast members — from their flagship mutant movie franchise.

That’s not the case with Deadpool 2. During Deadpool’s visit to the X-Mansion this time out, we see Wade Wilson riding around in Professor Xavier’s wheelchair and messing with the mutant-tracking headgear Cerebro. But just as Deadpool is once again complaining about the absence of X-Men, there’s a quick cut to the X-Men in the study as Nicholas Hoult’s Beast quietly closes the door so that Deadpool doesn’t know they’re actually home.

It’s one of Deadpool 2’s funnier Easter eggs, but as it turns out it was filmed on the set of an entirely different movie by a different director other than Deadpool 2’s David Leitch. Deadpool 2 co-screenwriter Rhett Reese confirmed to IGN that moment includes “the entire team from Dark Phoenix. Simon Kinberg shot that on the set of Dark Phoenix in Montreal.”

During that same phone interview with us, Reese’s writing partner Paul Wernick revealed the X-Men cameo was “green-screened in, obviously, in computer and post, on the back-end.” “We thought, how fun would it be that, you know, again, we had so much fun with the idea that no one was in the mansion in the first one,” Wernick explained. “And in fact, you know, they were all in the mansion in the second one, and just, Deadpool didn’t see them. You know, that was fun.”

X-Men: Dark Phoenix stars James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Evan Peters, and Nicholas Hoult.

Originally slated for a late 2018 release, Dark Phoenix will now open in early 2019 instead.
