Currys & PC World Black Friday sale: What to expect

Black Friday 2016 is almost upon us. The biggest sales day of the year, Black Friday typically falls on the first Friday after Thanksgiving in the US, which this year is 25 November. That’s a month before Christmas, so if you play your cards right, you might be able to do all your Christmas shopping in one fell swoop.

In this article, I’ll be focusing on the deals available at Currys and PC World, but you can check out our main Black Friday hub[1] for more information about Black Friday deals in general as well as how to make sure what you’re buying is actually good value for money. Of course, there’s still over a month to go until Black Friday at time of writing, so most retailers – Currys PC World included – haven’t announced what they’re going to be discounting yet. However, even now we can still make a pretty good guess at what we might see, and judging by the types of products that were discounted last year, there’s plenty of scope for bagging yourself a bargain.

TVs

If you’re looking for a brand-new TV, Black Friday is an excellent time to buy one.

Currys PC World slashed hundreds of pounds off several top models last year, so I’m expecting it to do the same this year as well. Models to look out for include the Panasonic Viera TX-58DX902B[2], the Samsung UE55KS9000[3] and the Samsung UE49KS7000[4], which are currently our top three TVs for 2016[5].

Home Cinema and media streamers

Amazon’s Fire TV Stick[6] was one of the best deals from last year, so expect plenty of Amazon products to get the same treatment this year. There were also some great soundbar and wireless speaker deals last year, so Black Friday could be a great time to upgrade your home audio system, too – particularly if you’re picking up a new TV.

Smartphones

Of course, Currys PC World now includes Carphone Warehouse as well, so you should be able to pick up a great smartphone bargain, too.

Our top picks this year[7] include the Samsung Galaxy S7[8], the LG G5[9] and the Moto G4 2016[10], so if your phone’s starting to look a bit old and tired, Black Friday could be a great time to bag yourself a brand new flagship on the cheap.

Laptops

Currys PC World typically has dozens of laptops on sale over Black Friday, but most of them usually aren’t particularly great deals, either because the hardware inside them isn’t very good, or they’re going end of life. As a result, you’ll need to take extra care here, but rest assured, we’ll be picking through all the deals nearer the time to make sure you know which laptops are good buys.

Tablets

Our thirst for new tablets seems to stalled over the last year, but if you’re still after a big screen Android device, then Black Friday is definitely the best time to pick one up. We saw some great bargains last year, including a few Amazon tablets, so the one we’d recommend keeping an eye on this year is the latest version of the Amazon Fire HD 8[11].

It’s by far the best budget tablet we’ve seen all year, and is currently our top pick for anyone looking to pick one up for under ?100. Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S2[12] was also discounted last year, so expect to see it make another appearance at this year’s Black Friday sale, hopefully at an even lower price than before.
