Samsung S8 UK price: How much does the Samsung S8 cost?

Initially rumoured at a higher price, the S8 and S8 Plus have actually surprised us, coming in cheaper than what we – and the world – had expected. At £689 for the S8 and £779 for the S8 Plus, the phones are still expensive, but not as eye-watering as the rumoured £800 and £900 price tags.

Samsung S8 design: Why did Samsung scrap its flat design?

It was rumoured that Samsung would no longer offer a “flat” version of its upcoming S8 flagship, whereby both variants of the phone (5.8in and 6.2in) would come with an edge-to-edge display. The rumours became reality, as both the S8 and S8 Plus have a beautiful curved display. This makes swiping a lot easier and provides a better feel when using the phone’s 18:9 display.

It’s easy to see why Samsung scrapped its flat design, as the Korean tech giant felt the phone’s flagship status deserved the best technology money could buy. In comparison to the LG G6, a few of us in the office felt the S8 and S8 Plus was more comfortable to use and due to its curved screen made it better for scrolling the web.

If you’re looking for a case to go alongside the S8 or S8 Plus, MobileFun has listed a few Samsung Galaxy S8[7] and S8 Plus cases and covers[8]

The S8 and S8 Plus both have a USB Type-C connector, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a fingerprint reader at the back.

Samsung S8 display: What resolution does the S8 have?

The 5.8in and 6.2in flagship phones come with a Quad HD+ (1,440 x 2,960) display and an 18:9 aspect ratio. This equates to a stunning 570ppi and 529ppi pixel density.

The spectacular pixel density is fantastic for VR. It comes to no surprise that Samsung paired the launch of the phones with their new 2017 Samsung Gear VR headset. Better still, if you’re a display geek like me, you’ll be pleased to know that the flagship phones have HDR, expanding colours and bringing image and video to life through clever technology.

You’ll need HDR-compatible content, but with the likes of Netflix and Amazon already behind it, it won’t be long till we see more HDR content available to everyone.

Samsung S8 camera: How good is the S8 camera?

At a glance:

  • 12-megapixel rear-facing camera with a f/1.7 aperture: The single rear camera combines phase detection and laser autofocus for fast snaps.
  • 8-megapixel front-facing camera with a f/1.7 aperture: A good front-facing camera with autofocus, as consumers are taking more selfies.

Initial speculations led us to believe that the S8 would come with a dual-lens camera, but later it was confirmed that Samsung would stick to the same camera found on the S7.

A rear-facing 12-megapixel camera joins the front-facing 8-megapixel selfie camera, both of which have an aperture of f/1.7 and make images look fantastic. The cameras on the S7 performed well in low-light conditions and is one of the best cameras found on a smartphone[10].

Samsung S8 processor and RAM

At the time of writing, Samsung has yet to announce its processor. But, based on our rumours prior to the phones’ launch, we anticipated a Snapdragon 835 or Exynos 8895. Samsung has often released two different variations of its S series smartphones – one with a Qualcomm Snapdragon chip and another with one of Samsung’s Exynos processors. If it follows the same pattern, the Qualcomm one is likely to have a Snapdragon 835 inside it – the next-generation successor to the blindingly quick Snapdragon 820/821.

Following rumours[11] and the screenshot below of Geekbench 4, the S8 and S8 Plus will feature Samsung’s very own Exynos 8895[12] chip and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835[13]. Depending on where you live (Korea, Europe or North America), it’ll determine the chip you’ll find in your Samsung S8 and S8 Plus. Through the leaked screenshot and benchmark results found on Geekbench 4, the Exynos 8895 performs slightly better than the Snapdragon 835.

One thing is for certain, there is 4GB of RAM on both models.

Samsung S8 battery

Battery life is extremely important these days, and with Samsung having an abrupt end to its Note 7 series due to exploding batteries – I’m sure the latest Samsung S8 will have an impressive battery capacity and life.

A 3,000mAh capacity is found within the S8 and with that extra space, the S8 Plus has a 3,500mAh capacity.

Unfortunately, Samsung lost its removable battery functionality through the use of a glass back. As having a removable battery is a tradeoff for waterproofing. The S8 and S8 Plus are IP68 water-resistant and dust-proof.

Samsung S8 headphone jack

After Apple removed the headphone jack, Samsung could have also opted to go for a USB Type-C connection alone. The iPhone 7 received a lot of flack for its removal of the 3.5mm headphone jack, however, so it didn’t surprise us to see that the 3.5mm headphone jack is still present in the 2017 Samsung devices.

Samsung S8 software

The S8 and S8 Plus run on Android 7 Nougat, Google’s latest iteration of the mobile operating system. TouchWiz is back and its integration is still a love, hate relationship for many.

Samsung Bixby

On 20 March 2017, Samsung issued a press release on Bixby[14], the new AI voice assistant. The new assistant is Samsung’s own version of Google Assistant and Siri; see it as an upgraded version of Samsung’s S Voice. Bixby will learn from searches and is integrated with the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus smartphones.

Unfortunately, this is for South Korea only, but the US will get it a month after launch, and the UK by the end of the year. There’s not much Samsung disclosed regarding its launch date, but it’s in the pipeline.

Latest rumours – S8 Price:
Several sources[3], including the reputable Evan Blass have leaked the European prices for the S8 and S8 Plus. The S8 is to cost a whopping €799/£799 and the S8 Plus an eye-watering €899/£899. This would indicate a post-Brexit hike in UK prices.

S8 design:
Shared by Evan Blass on Twitter[4], we see the S8 and S8 Plus pictured (below) to come out in three colours: Black sky, orchid grey and arctic silver. Since Evan Blass’ last tweet, a new one has emerged with the S8 in black, grey and gold[5], which adds more colours to the S8 line-up.

Latest news – S8 specs:
Benchmark results for the S8 Plus have emerged[6]. According to GoAndroid, both the Exynos 8895 and Snapdragon 835 will be featured in the S8 Plus. This suggests two variants of the phone will be released. Historically, Samsung has released two variants of its phones, with its phones varying from phone released in Korea, North America and Europe. We’ll have to wait and see what Samsung has in the pipeline for the S8 and S8 Plus.

Further to these benchmark results, Winfuture[7] has disclosed full specs and press images of the Galaxy S8. The leaked specs reveal details of the Samsung Galaxy S8 (SM-G950F), the 5.8in variant of the device. We’re not sure if this is the regular or Plus version of the device, but given the size of the LG G6, we’d presume this is the normal version of the Galaxy S8.

Unpacked 2017 app: Ahead of tomorrow’s 29 March event, Samsung has released the Unpacked 2017 app on the Play Store[8]. The app has a countdown timer and details about the event. Samsung S8 design rumours: Will Samsung scrap its flat design?

We will tap into design rumours later in this article, but it’s rumoured that Samsung will no longer offer a “flat” version of its upcoming S8 flagship, whereby both sizes of the phone (5.8in and 6.2in), will come with an edge-to-edge display.

Reports by SamMobile[13] suggest that the phones will be called the Dream (SM-G950) at 5.8in and Dream 2 (SM-G955) at 6.2in. This has since been confirmed with the 6.2in G955’s page appearing on Samsung’s website[14]

A leaked image (below) was featured on VentureBeat[15] – the image comes from the well-known Evan Blass[16], who’s often a good source for leaked images, specs and rumours.

Samsung S8 UK price rumours: How much will the Samsung S8 cost?

Samsung S8 UK price

Rumours suggest that the S8 will start at £799/€799, while the S8 Plus will be £899/€899. Its huge price tag comes to us as a surprise, as it’ll be out of most people’s budget. Even though the LG G6 has a £699 price tag, we felt its price tag was too high. With Samsung adding an extra £100 to the price tag, we’re struggling to understand the price hike. Brexit could be a factor, although that’ll be marginal.

Given the S7 was £569 and the S7 Edge was £639 at launch, the S8 might be taking it a step too far!

You can register your interest for the S8 through Carphone Warehouse’s website[17].

Samsung S8 UK release date: When will the S8 be released?

After receiving an official invitation to Samsung’s unpacked event, the S8 and S8 Plus will be announced on today. We would expect the phone to hit the shelves in early March 2017. A video from Samsung Mobile can be seen on YouTube[18].

Samsung S8 design rumours: How will the S8 look and feel?

As aforementioned, the S8 will most likely have an edge-to-edge display. There are no concrete rumours on its design, but it’s expected that its looks and design will be close to the S7 Edge. This would include a metal ring protecting its edges and a glass or plastic-type design at the back.

Images shared by Ice universe (@UniverseIce)[20], indicate that Chinese protective film manufacturers seem to have their hands on the latest S8 handset – with a further hint that  Samsung’s 2017 flagship will no longer have physical buttons and therefore, will move to a more water-resistant design. This also seems to indicate that there will be no removable battery.

MobileFun has listed Samsung Galaxy S8[21] and S8 Plus cases and covers[22]. They come in a variety of colours and designs, where the S8 will seemingly come in two different sizes. Evan Blass[23] has since shared an image on Twitter, where we see the S8 and S8 Plus in three colours: Black sky, orchid grey and arctic silver, and also in black, grey and gold[24] in another tweet.

A video has appeared on YouTube showcasing an S8[25] – this seems to back up the claims of its design.

Samsung S8 display rumours: What resolution will the S8 have?

At a glance:

  • 5.8in and 6.2in with a QHD+ (1,440 x 2,960) display: Having seen the LG G6, we expect the phone to come with a QHD+ screen, however, Samsung might still stun us with a 4K display.
  • An 18:9 aspect ratio: With the LG G6 turning heads, it would be fitting for the S8-line to share the same aspect ratio.

Samsung is really pushing VR through the Samsung Gear VR headset[26], and it would make sense for its flagship 2017 smartphones to come with a high-end display. Currently, the S7 and S7 Edge have a WQHD (1,440 x 2,560) resolution, pushing an impressive ~534 to 577ppi.

The LG G6 left us impressed at MWC 2017[27], with a vastly impressive 18:9 aspect ratio, allowing two separate parts of the screen to be used simultaneously and evenly, the LG G6 set the bar high for productivity. We would expect the same to come out of Samsung’s headquarters. This would result in a display with a resolution of 1,440 x 2,960 and 567ppi for the regular S8 and a 531ppi for the 6.2in S8 Plus.

The image (below) was shared by Evan Blass on Twitter[28]. We expect the phone to look like the one pictured, as it has a borderless design and a very large display.

There are a few rumours suggesting the screen will have an integrated fingerprint sensor within the display itself, but from what we have seen, a rear-mounted fingerprint reader is more likely to appear. It will sit by the camera lens at the back of the phone.

Samsung S8 camera rumours: How good is the S8 camera?

At a glance:

  • 12-megapixel rear-facing camera with a F/1.7 aperture: The single rear camera will combine phase detection and laser autofocus for fast snaps.
  • 8-megapixel front-facing camera with a F/1.7 aperture: We’re expecting a good front-facing camera with autofocus, as consumers are taking more selfies.

Rumours suggest that Samsung wants to up its camera game, with competitors such as the LG G6[30]Huawei P10[31] and even the iPhone 7 Plus[32], that have dual-lens cameras.

Initial speculations lead us to believe that the S8 would come with a dual-lens camera, but further to recent leaks and specs it’s evidently clear that Samsung is maintaining a single-camera design on the S8. This isn’t to say that Samsung has slouched on its camera, quite the opposite. The leaked specs reveal a 12-megapixel F/1.7 aperture camera with phase detection and laser autofocus. This means the S8’s camera will supposedly take fantastic low-light images while maintaining high levels of detail.

Samsung S8 specs rumours: S8 key specifications

Samsung S8 processor and RAM

This one’s a little harder to predict, as Samsung has often released two different variations of its S series smartphones – one with a Qualcomm Snapdragon chip and another with one of Samsung’s Exynos processors. If it follows the same pattern next year, the Qualcomm one is likely to have a Snapdragon 835 inside it – the next-generation successor to the blindingly quick Snapdragon 820.

Following rumours[33], the S8 and S8 Plus will feature Samsung’s very own Exynos 8895[34] chip and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835[35].

From the Geekbench screenshot seen below, they’ll be 4GB of RAM found on the S8 and S8 Plus. There have been rumours in the past suggesting 6GB of RAM. GoAndroid suggest that the higher memory variant might be a China (or even Korea-only) exclusive.

Samsung S8 battery

Battery life is extremely important these days, and with Samsung having an abrupt end to its Note 7 series due to exploding batteries – I’m sure the latest Samsung S8 will have an impressive battery capacity and life.

Expect at least 3,000mAh capacity within the S8. I do hope we see a fast-charging battery that can last a full day of use.

Samsung also lost its removable battery functionality through the use of a glass back. Having a removable battery is a tradeoff for waterproofing. We can’t be sure that Samsung will bring back the old Galaxy S design, but with the Note 7 battery problems, we could see a return of the removable battery.

Samsung S8 headphone jack

With Apple’s stance of removing the headphone jack, Samsung might also opt to go for a USB Type-C connection alone. The iPhone 7 received a lot of flack for its removal of the 3.5mm headphone jack, so we wouldn’t be surprised if Apple kept its proprietary jack for convenience.

Nevertheless, it’s a feature that most might miss, and the last thing Samsung wants to do is get more people annoyed about a smartphone.

Samsung galaxy S7 charge

^Image of the Samsung Galaxy S7

Samsung S8 ports

I expect the Samsung S8 to include a USB Type-C port for charging and transferring files. USB Type-C has become a norm in the mobile industry, where a micro-USB port will seem outdated. As noted above, we might also see a removal of the headphone jack – although that would be a risky call from Samsung.

Samsung S8 storage

I would expect a minimum storage option of 64GB. The larger storage option could provide 128GB of space, but expect to see the return of the microSD expansion slot, whereby storage can be further increased, granting you an extra 256GB of storage space.

Samsung S8 water-resistance

It would come as no surprise to see the S8 being water resistant. However, this does conflict with a removable battery – it’ll have to be one or the other unless Samsung can conjure up a plan to combine the two.

Samsung S8 speakers

It would be nice to see dual-stereo front-facing speakers included on the S8, but it’s a long shot. Samsung hasn’t made a flagship product with front-facing speakers – having them included would be beneficial to watch films, but we can see the limitations that this might have on the S8’s bezels.

Samsung S8 software

It is to be expected to run the latest version of Android 7 Nougat and have TouchWiz integrated. Many, might feel that a pure, stock Android, would result in a better experience – but that’s simply wishful thinking.

One thing we did notice is the removal of the IR blaster, it might make a comeback, but that all depends on Samsung’s priorities and customer feedback from their 7-series product line.

You can register your interest for the S8 through Carphone Warehouse’s website[16].

Samsung S8 UK release date: When will the S8 be released?

After receiving an official invitation to Samsung’s unpacked event, the S8 and S8 Plus will be announced on 29 March 2017. We would expect the phone to hit the shelves in early March 2017. A video from Samsung Mobile can be seen on YouTube[17].

Images shared by Ice universe (@UniverseIce)[19], indicate that Chinese protective film manufacturers seem to have their hands on the latest S8 handset – with a further hint that  Samsung’s 2017 flagship will no longer have physical buttons and therefore, will move to a more water-resistant design. This also seems to indicate that there will be no removable battery.

MobileFun has listed Samsung Galaxy S8[20] and S8 Plus cases and covers[21]. They come in a variety of colours and designs, where the S8 will seemingly come in two different sizes. Evan Blass[22] has since shared an image on Twitter, where we see the S8 and S8 Plus in three colours: Black sky, orchid grey and arctic silver, and also in black, grey and gold[23] in another tweet.

A video has appeared on YouTube showcasing an S8[24] – this seems to back up the claims of its design.

Samsung is really pushing VR through the Samsung Gear VR headset[25], and it would make sense for its flagship 2017 smartphones to come with a high-end display. Currently, the S7 and S7 Edge have a WQHD (1,440 x 2,560) resolution, pushing an impressive ~534 to 577ppi.

The LG G6 left us impressed at MWC 2017[26], with a vastly impressive 18:9 aspect ratio, allowing two separate parts of the screen to be used simultaneously and evenly, the LG G6 set the bar high for productivity. We would expect the same to come out of Samsung’s headquarters. This would result in a display with a resolution of 1,440 x 2,960 and 567ppi for the regular S8 and a 531ppi for the 6.2in S8 Plus.

The image (below) was shared by Evan Blass on Twitter[27].

Rumours suggest that Samsung wants to up its camera game, with competitors such as the LG G6[29]Huawei P10[30] and even the iPhone 7 Plus[31], that have dual-lens cameras.

Following rumours[32], the S8 and S8 Plus will feature Samsung’s very own Exynos 8895[33] chip and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835[34].

It is to be expected to run the latest version of Android Marshmallow and have TouchWiz integrated. Many, might feel that a pure, stock Android, would result in a better experience – but that’s simply wishful thinking.

One thing we did notice is the removal of the IR blaster, it might make a comeback, but that all depends on Samsung’s priorities and customer feedback from their 7-series product line.

Latest news – S8 specs:
Benchmark results for the S8 Plus have emerged[6]. According to GoAndroid, both the Exynos 8895 and Snapdragon 835 will be featured in the S8 Plus.

Reports by SamMobile[10] suggest that the phones will be called the Dream (SM-G950) at 5.8in and Dream 2 (SM-G955) at 6.2in. This has since been confirmed with the 6.2in G955’s page appearing on Samsung’s website[11]

A leaked image (below) was featured on VentureBeat[12] – the image comes from the well-known Evan Blass[13], who’s often a good source for leaked images, specs and rumours.

Reports by SamMobile[8] suggest that the phones will be called the Dream (SM-G950) at 5.6in and Dream 2 (SM-G955) at 6.2in. This has since been confirmed with the 6.2in G955’s page appearing on Samsung’s website[9]

However, some still anticipate a 5.8in variant of the phone to appear with a flat design. We still expect Samsung to scrap its flat design and only provide

You can register your interest for the S8 through Carphone Warehouse’s website[12].

Samsung S8 UK release date: When will the S8 be released?

After receiving an official invitation to Samsung’s unpacked event, the S8 and S8 Plus will be announced on 29 March 2017. We would expect the phone to hit the shelves in early March 2017. A video from Samsung Mobile can be seen on YouTube[13].

Images shared by Ice universe (@UniverseIce)[14], indicate that Chinese protective film manufacturers seem to have their hands on the latest S8 handset – with a further hint that  Samsung’s 2017 flagship will no longer have physical buttons and therefore, will move to a more water-resistant design. This also seems to indicate that there will be no removable battery.

MobileFun has listed Samsung Galaxy S8[15] and S8 Plus cases and covers[16]. They come in a variety of colours and designs, where the S8 will seemingly come in two different sizes. Evan Blass[17] has since shared an image on Twitter, where we see the S8 and S8 Plus in three colours: Black sky, orchid grey and arctic silver, and also in black, grey and gold[18] in another tweet.

A video has appeared on YouTube showcasing an S8[19] – this seems to back up the claims of its design.

Samsung S8 display rumours: What resolution will the S8 have?

At a glance:

  • 5.6in and 6.2in with a QHD+ (1,440 x 2,880) display: Having seen the LG G6, we expect the phone to come with a QHD+ screen, however, Samsung might still stun us with a 4K display.
  • An 18:9 aspect ratio: With the LG G6 turning heads, it would be fitting for the S8-line to share the same aspect ratio.

Samsung is really pushing VR through the Samsung Gear VR headset[20], and it would make sense for its flagship 2017 smartphones to come with a high-end display. Currently, the S7 and S7 Edge have a WQHD (1,440 x 2,560) resolution, pushing an impressive ~534 to 577ppi.

The LG G6 left us impressed at MWC 2017[21], with a vastly impressive 18:9 aspect ratio, allowing two separate parts of the screen to be used simultaneously and evenly, the LG G6 set the bar high for productivity. We would expect the same to come out of Samsung’s headquarters. This would result in a display with a resolution of 1,440 x 2,880 and 564ppi.

The image (below) was shared by Evan Blass on Twitter[22].

  • Dual-lens 12- to 24-megapixel rear-facing camera with dual-LED flash: This would keep up with current market trends.
  • 8-megapixel front-facing camera: We’re expecting a good front-facing camera, as consumers are taking more selfies.

Rumours suggest that Samsung wants to up its camera game, with competitors such as the LG G6[24]Huawei P10[25] and even the iPhone 7 Plus[26], that already have dual-lens cameras.

It wouldn’t come to us as a shock to see a dual-camera lens on the latest flagship Samsung S8. Furthermore, it might even come with a higher 12 to 24-megapixel shooter that’ll have a slightly larger sensor than other smartphones out there.

Following rumours[27], the S8 and S8 Plus will feature Samsung’s very own Exynos 8895[28] chip and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835[29].

It is to be expected to run the latest version of Android Marshmallow and have TouchWiz integrated. Many, might feel that a pure, stock Android, would result in a better experience – but that’s simply wishful thinking.

One thing we did notice is the removal of the IR blaster, it might make a comeback, but that all depends on Samsung’s priorities and customer feedback from their 7-series product line.
