Google is thought to be preparing a range of products for launch this October. These include the two new Pixel X and XL smartphones[2], possibly a new Nexus 7 tablet built by Huawei[3], and an update to the Chromecast 2[4] stick which is set to feature 4K video support.

In this article we’ll keep you up to date on all the rumours about the Chromecast 4K, such as when it will be released, the price, and features. We’ll keep updating the story regularly so you’ll know what to expect and when. See: Best media streamers 2016[5]

Chromecast 4K: What is a Chromecast?

These simple media streaming devices plug into the HDMI port on the back of your TV and allow you to send video content from smartphones, tablets, and laptops.

The first model came out back in 2013 and Google updated it last year, but the expectation is that a new 4K compatible version will appear before Christmas 2016. See: How to set up a Chromecast[6] Chromecast 4K Release date, price, and features

Chromecast 4K: Release Date rumours

There’s no official date yet, but we’ve seen a number of reports suggesting Google will hold a press event on October 4th 2016 where it will announce the Chromecast 4K alongside several other products.

Chromecast 4K: Price rumours

At the moment there are no confirmed price details available.

The current Chromecast 2 sells for ?30 and we would expect the new model to cost around the same when it’s released.

Chromecast 4K: Feature rumours

Obviously the main upgrade to the device will be its ability to stream 4K content. This will put the Chromecast 4K in a rarified position as one of very few TV sticks or set top boxes to offer Ultra HD content. Currently 4K is only available on the Amazon Fire TV 4K[7] box and the Roku 4, although the latter is yet to be released in the UK.

You can pick up a few Android TV-style sticks that will offer 4K, but in terms of mainstream manufacturers it still remains a new feature. Obviously you’ll need a TV that supports 4K Ultra-HD in order to receive the 4K content, but a Chromecast will usually detect the maximum resolution of your display and match the content accordingly. In this respect you could buy the Chromecast 4K before you actually upgrade your TV and it will work as a HD streaming device without issue.

Information is very scarce at the moment in regards to any additional features, but we’d expect that the WiFi capabilities and radio antennas would need to be upgraded to cope with the demands of delivering stutter-free 4K streaming. See: What can you watch on Google Chromecast in the UK?[8]

Chromecast 4K: What will it be called?

While Chromecast 4K remains a strong contender, there have also been reports that Google might opt for Chromecast Plus or Chromecast Ultra. That’s not long to wait now until the October 4th event, so be sure to check back to this page regularly in the run up to that date as we’ll be updating this feature with any news that comes to light.
