Galaxy Tab S3: Quick facts

When is the Galaxy Tab S3 coming out? It will be announced on 26 February 2017 and will likely go on sale late-March/early-April.

What Galaxy Tab S3 models can we expect? This time around just the one, with the compact version ditched in favour of a 9.6in-screen model. As before there will be both Wi-Fi and cellular versions. What’s new in Galaxy Tab S3? Based on rumours and speculation, the Galaxy Tab S3 is feature a design more like that of the company’s flagship phones with a metal frame but glass front and rear.

We don’t think this will be a curved-edge screen. There will be new support for the S Pen stylus, which is itself expected to get an upgrade (either now or in time for the Galaxy Note 8 launch), plus some powerful core hardware. It’s unlikely the Galaxy Tab S3 will get the Snapdragon 835 before the Galaxy S8, though we could see an upgrade to the Snapdragon 821 (or one of Samsung’s own Exynos chips), along with 4GB of RAM and a minimum 32GB of storage.

The display is likely to be a Quad-HD SuperAMOLED panel. Expect 12- and 5Mp cameras, plus USB-C in place of Micro-USB. We expect the Tab S3 to come in black or silver, but no longer white.[3][4]

How much will the Galaxy Tab S3 cost? According to reports, the Tab S3 will cost around ?460 at launch, with another ?100 on top for the cellular version. What will Samsung launch at MWC 2017? As well as the Galaxy Tab S3 Samsung is thought to be announcing a new Galaxy Tab Pro S2. Rumours suggest it will feature a 12in Quad-HD Super AMOLED display and be powered by a 3.1GHz Intel Kaby Lake Core i5-7200 GPU and 4GB of LPDDR3 RAM.

There should also be 128GB of flash storage. Expect to find 5/13Mp front and rear cameras, support for the S Pen stylus and keyboard cover, a 5,770mAh battery and two USB-C ports.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 UK release date, price rumours: When is the Galaxy Tab S3 coming out?

Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 launch date: 26 February 2017
Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 UK release date: March/April 2017 (TBC)

Samsung Galaxy Tab S tablet[8] launches are traditionally annual, or at least they have been in recent years, so we expected the S3 family to arrive in July 2016 ahead of the (now discontinued) Note 7[9] that was announced on 2 August.

However, that didn’t happen, and neither were any tablets unveiled during Samsung’s IFA 2016 press conference on 1 September. Sammobile suggests that the Tab S3 will arrive in Q1 2017, with the model numbers SM-T820 (Wi-Fi) and SM-T825 (LTE). Given that the Tab S2 9.7 has the model numbers SM-T810 (Wi-Fi) and SM-T815 (LTE) we would assume it is specifically referring to the larger version of the tablet, and the most recent rumours do seem to suggest there won’t be a compact model.

However, this does not rule out the smaller Tab from also getting an update.[10] According to ETNews, a Samsung official has said that the Galaxy Tab S3 will be announced in the opening presentation of MWC 2017. This makes sense, given that Samsung has already confirmed it won’t be unveiling the Galaxy S8 there[11].

The teaser image on the MWC invite does appear to show a tablet, so it’s pretty much a given we’ll see the new Tab S3. Samsung’s MWC event will take place on 26 February at 7PM local time (CET). Tab S3 MWC

Rumours that a Tab S3 release is imminent following news that the Tab S3 has been certified by the FCC[12], which happens only when a product is about to be released. It also received Bluetooth certification[13] at the beginning of January 2017, and was awarded Wi-Fi certification by the WiFi Alliance.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 UK price rumours: How much will the Galaxy Tab S3 cost?

According to Naver News[14], the Galaxy Tab S3 is going to come in at 700,000 Korean Won, which is around ?464 and more expensive than the larger Tab S2 at launch. Expect to pay around ?100 on top if you want the 4G version.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 specification rumours: What to expect from the Galaxy Tab S3

When we first heard rumours of a potential Samsung Galaxy Tab edge, we wondered whether Samsung might go down the same design route as it has for its S-series phones, complete with the metal frame and front- and rear glass panels. However, sketches revealed at the FCC show the new Tab S3 to have a very similar design to the Tab S2, only slimmer. That’s not to say there won’t be a curved-edge tablet, in essence a larger version of the Note 7, although the curved edge functionality seems less appealing in a tablet and may be no more than wishful thinking.

Samsung has made the dual-edge feature the default in the Note 7, and we are expecting it to do the same with its S-series in March. Could we soon see all Samsung’s flagship mobile devices come with the dual-edge feature? Also see: Best Samsung phones 2016: What is the difference between Galaxy Note, Galaxy S, Galaxy A and Galaxy J?[16][17] According to journalist Roland Quandt[18], the new Galaxy Tab S3 will come in black or a new silver model, but not white.

It will also for the first time come with Samsung’s S Pen stylus, previously reserved for the Note phablet family. This has been rumoured to get an upgrade, though we don’t know whether this will take place in time for the Tab S3 or the Note 8[19] due later this year. The Tab S3 will be a powerful tablet with some high-end specs.

Expect a high-resolution, likely Quad-HD (1536×2048-pixel), Super AMOLED display. The new tablet is also rumoured to feature Qualcomm’s quad-core Snapdragon 820 processor with 4GB of RAM and 32GB of storage, though we wouldn’t be surprised to find the Snapdragon 835. Leaked benchmarks[20] have revealed a score of 4,275 points multi-core (1,225 single-core) in Geekbench 3.0 for the larger Tab S3 9.7in and 4,122 points multi-core (1,312 single-core) for the smaller Tab S3 8.0in.

That’s less than that achieved by the company’s flagship phone, the Galaxy S7[21], but not at all bad. It’s worth pointing out that these results leaked back when the Tab S3 was rumoured to come with the Snapdragon 652 chip and 3GB of RAM, and since then it has also been rumoured that there will not be an 8in model. It’s also quite possible the benchmarks could have been fake.

Cameras are tipped to be 12Mp at the back and 5Mp at the front, and we’d expect Samsung to use USB-C port for charging the internal battery – rumoured to be 4,000mAh in the Tab S3 8in (again, which might not see the light of day) and 5,870mAh in the Tab S3 9.6in. Expect Samsung’s fast charging tech to feature also. The Tab S3 will run Android Nougat[22] with the TouchWiz UI.

We’ll bring you more rumours as we hear them.
