Vive Focus Is HTC's New Standalone VR Headset

Shifting focus.

Vive announced its new, standalone VR headset, the Vive Focus, but it looks like it’s not coming West just yet.

The company’s Chinese[2] website has details on the device, described as the “most immersive VR experience” in the world. Currently there’s only a link for developer’s kits, and not a consumer-ready product.

The device uses the Snapdragon 835 chipset, a 10nm Samsung chip found in the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus, among other phones. It’s completely wireless and comes with a small controller, something Vive says will “save the hassle of connecting to your phone or computer.” Beyond processing power and its wirelessness, there isn’t much else in the way of specifications on the site just yet, including a price-point.

Google and HTC were working on a standalone VR headset[3], but according to The Verge[4], the Vive-branded Google Daydream headset has been cancelled. However, just last month, Facebook showed off the Oculus Rift standalone VR headset[5], the Oculus Go. It also announced Oculus Rift’s £399 price point, which includes the headset and Touch controllers, is now permanent.
