Best iPhone photo & camera apps

The latest iPhones and iPads have great cameras, and there are plenty of photo-editing and filter apps out there that can take your photos from looking good to looking fabulous. Here are the best camera and photo apps for iOS to make your snaps stand out.

Afterlight 2

Beautifully considered editable effects, textures, filters and frames made AfterLight a must-have photo app for anyone who wants a little extra from their iPhone snaps. Now its developers have introduced AfterLight 2, which preserves the much-loved features of the original.

The frames help bring photos to everyday photos, and do a fair job of making them stand out from the pack, especially on Instagram. Seductive light leaks, meanwhile, have been created using 35mm and instant film, which helps ensure the extra textures look more authentic. Other tools include clarity, contrast, exposure, straightening and the like for fine-tuning your photos.

The much loved and well reviewed iPhone and iPad app Camera+ quickly became the go-to Camera replacement and set the standard for shooters back when the iPhone 4 arrived.

It brought features like image stabilisation and exposure control long before Apple did. But this photo app hasn’t rested on its laurels. Camera+ is continuously the best in its class, with a tremendous set of features, fantastic editing, and a blissfully customisable interface that lets you choose exactly how much control you want over the camera.

You’ll get tools that help you get the best out of your photos, from fixing the basics to significantly enhancing your images with creative filters, borders and text options. Combined with a range of shooting choices, Camera+ proves an essential app that benefits greatly from a dedicated developer who regularly offers new updates and adds features. Top in-app purchases, including new FX Packs, are for once worth the additional investment, adding to an already quality package.

Enlight was one of Apple’s Apps of the Year for 2015, and rightly so.

It offers some incredible creative features that can transform your iPhone snaps into stunning works of art. You can blend images for double exposure effects, add text, use masks and more to wow friends and followers. We’ve spent hours editing images with Enlight and have been continuously impressed with this photo app’s results.

It’s well worth its price tag.

Facetune is one of the best apps we’ve come across for editing portraits and selfies, and has been the number one Photo and Video app in more than 100 countries. It offers Photoshop-style tools that can be surprisingly subtle if used correctly, to enable you to whiten teeth, remove blemishes, smooth skin, add details, edit the skin tone, fill bald patches and get rid of red eye. You can also reshape your photos for deeper edits, defocus areas and add filters and frames to finish off the image.

Chances are you may already have this app.

Instagram has taken the world by storm over the past few years as celebrities and brands have signed up. Traditionally, Instagram would let you share only square images, but you can now share images of any shape and apply Instagram’s preset filters to enhance the photo.

Five quid is a small price to pay for this excellent camera app that improves the iOS photography experience no end. The marketing promises the ‘same level of control as an advanced DSLR camera’ – that’s perhaps a bit of a stretch, but if you do all your shooting from your iPhone then you’ll probably want to invest.

It’s a bit of a shame that a paid-for app still has in-app purchases to get all the features, but if you want a deep dive into the world of photography and you have a tenner spare to play with, it’s well worth it.

A charming filter app that will appeal to fans of elderly hardware (hardware from the 1970s to the 1990s, to be more exact), Retrospecs allows you to manipulate your photos so they display as they would have appeared on the Sega Genesis, Commodore 64, Atari 2600 and so on. There’s an impressive array of presets, or you can create your own custom virtual system by adjusting the parameters. You can also apply a range of animations (screen flickering, or images rendering slowly from the top down) to more fully mimic the retro experience, and export as a video or GIF.

Thanks to a deal with Google, Snapseed is now free, yet offers a range of excellent tools and enhancements that rival many paid photos apps.

From single tap Auto Correct and tools for cropping and straightening images, to more creative options such as Retrolux, Vintage, Drama, Black and White, Grunge and Tilt-Shift, Snapseed is feature-packed and worthy of a place on your home screen.

Intuitive and tactile, you adjust effects by swiping your finger, and it’s ideally suited for both quick fixes and much more advanced edits.

Snapseed also benefits greatly from the ability to import images you’ve already taken, work on them then export at a resolution that won’t disappoint when shared.
