Hyper-targeted attack against 13 iPhones dropped malicious apps via MDM

In what appears to be a case of highly focused social engineering against a small group of iPhone users, malicious actors managed to get 13 iPhones registered on their rogue mobile device management (MDM) servers and then pushed out applications that allowed the hackers to track the locations of the phones and read victims’ SMS messages. The attacks, reported by Cisco’s Talos, used the “BOptions” sideloading technique to modify versions of legitimate applications, including WhatsApp and Telegram.

The initiative inserted additional libraries into the application packages, and the modified applications were then deployed to the 13 victim iPhones via the rogue mobile device management systems. “The malicious code inserted into these apps is capable of collecting and exfiltrating information from the device, such as the phone number, serial number, location, contacts, user’s photos, SMS, and Telegram and WhatsApp chat messages,” wrote Talos researchers Warren Mercer, Paul Rascagneres, and Andrew Williams in a post on the attack. “Such information can be used to manipulate a victim or even use it for blackmail or bribery.” Two different MDM servers–one at the domain ios-certificate-update.com and the other at wpitcher.com–were used in the targeted attack.

Both appear to have been based on the open source mdm-server project, an Apache-licensed MDM platform. Registration with the servers–which used certificates tied to mail.ru email addresses–gave the attackers essentially free rein to track the devices taken over and push malware to them. But because of the nature of MDM, successful takeover of devices would have required a substantial amount of social engineering to get users to go through all the steps voluntarily.

Installation of the modified applications would have thrown up alerts to the user, as shown in the image above this article.

Talos analysts’ inspection of the server found that the attackers had left information about an iPhone used as a test platform for the attack on the servers–both showed registration of a device with the same phone number, with the device names “Test” and “mdmdev.” The device data showed that the attackers were likely based in India.

Six professionals have been brought together by crime boss Joe Cabot and his son Nice Guy Eddie for a heist at Karina's Wholesale Diamonds. The six have never met before and each has a colour-coded name to protect their identity: Messrs Pink, White, Blond, Orange, Blue and Brown.

It's the perfect set-up and should be the perfect crime. The theory is simple: get in, get the diamonds, and then get out quick - two minutes maximum and away with the rocks that will fetch big bucks. But the heist goes badly wrong, as the cops come out of nowhere and all hell breaks loose. Alarms are triggered and the cops are breathing down the team's necks, and that's where this game kicks off.

You literally call the shots from here on in as you choose how to go about surviving the game. Whether you go off like a hyper-psycho or remain professional in your outlook, well...it's your call. Your weapons - and there are lots of 'em in Reservoir Dogs - and how you handle them are the key to your survival.

You'll get away with a lot by aiming accurately, straight-shooting and a quick re-load.

You don't have an unlimited capacity to carry all weapons you might find: only a maximum of two handguns and one machine gun/rifle or shotgun with suitable ammo can be carried.

So, after a tutorial that lasts as long as your author's first ever go at Battlezone circa 1979, i.e., a long tutorial, you're in the diamond store with 60 seconds to go outside and surrender.

But you're not going to do that, are you?

Oh no, you're going to load up on bullets and blow the cops away instead.

Delightful, there's blood and death everywhere!

The game is as faithful to the film as it can be, given its interactive nature, and from the opening bars of the groovy 'Little Green Bag', you know Reservoir Dogs is going to be a lot of fun, especially if you're familiar with the source material. The film earned its 18 Certificate for a reason: the same stands for the game - those of a sensitive disposition should maybe stay away.. General Cypher Raige (Smith) is an important figure in the new civilisation humans have built on Nova Prime following the mass departure from Earth centuries before.

After a lengthy tour of duty, Cypher is looking forward to spending some time with his 13-year-old son Kitai (Jaden Smith).

However, when Cypher and Kitai's spacecraft is damaged in an ast*roid storm, forcing them to crash land on the abandoned Earth, the necessity of father-son bonding is accelerated.

With Cypher critically injured from the crash, Kitai must find a way to signal for help on a planet reclaimed by nature, ruled by hyper-evolved animals and containing the alien creature who has escaped from the wreckage of their craft.
