Samsung Galaxy A Series 2018 release date and specs rumours

It’s a busy end of year for Samsung. It has just announced the rumoured Galaxy A7 with three rear cameras, but more phones are expected at an event on 11 October in Malaysia. Samsung sent out invites for a ‘4x Fun – A Galaxy Event’ launch, which many are taking to mean a phone with four cameras.

A noted Samsung leaker, Ice Universe, claims these are all rear cameras. That would make it the first phone to have more than three (the Huawei P20 Pro is the best-known three-lens phone), but no-one knows exactly what they all do.

It’s entirely possible that this is the widely rumoured Galaxy X, the phone with the ‘foldable’ screen. However, it’s also possible that it’s the Galaxy A9 Star Pro.

At least, that’s what the unreleased phone is being called by some. Samsung Mobile News tweeted that the phone will have the part number SM-A920 and will be available in black, blue gradient and pink gradient. More importantly it states that the four cameras “will be on the left sinde [sic] (vertical)”.

We already know the A7 has three cameras in a vertical arrangement, so it’s not hard to believe Samsung would retain a similar design when adding a fourth lens.

The Galaxy A9 Star Pro (SM-A920) will come with four cameras and will be available in Black, Blue Gradient and Pink Gradient. I recieved some pics of the device: The fingerprint sensor will be placed in the middle. The four cameras will be on the left sinde (vertical) (1/3)

Why four cameras?

Here’s how we think they will be used:

  • Wide (standard)
  • Telephoto (2x zoom)
  • Wide-angle (likely to be 120 degrees)
  • Depth-sensing camera

Galaxy A9 Star Pro release date & price

The phone, if it’s real, will be announced on 11 October. The release date should be shortly after this, but we’ll have to wait until then to find out. Price is a harder one to gauge.

Samsung has already said it will bring new features to mid-range phones first, before they appear on flagships. That’s an unusual strategy, but it makes the rumours all the more believable. But this tech comes at a price, so expect the A9 Star Pro to be at the top end of mid-range in terms of cost, possibly on a par with the OnePlus 6.

Galaxy A7 2018 release date

Although the A7 is now official, we’re still in the dark on some of the finer details such as a price, the exact processor it has and also precisely when it will launch.

Samsung has only said it will be available in select Asian and European markets starting this autumn but hasn’t specified the UK. It’s a mid-range phone, of course, which gives a fairly good idea of how much it will cost. Our estimate is around GBP400-500 SIM-free – partly based on the Galaxy A8 being GBP449.

It’s available in these four colours:

Galaxy A7 2018 specs and features

Here are the main specs:

  • 6in AMOLED screen, 2220×1080
  • Android 8.0 Oreo
  • 4 or 6GB RAM
  • Octacore processor, 2GHz
  • 64 / 128GB storage + microSD up to 512GB)
  • Side-mounted fingerprint scanner
  • 3300mAh battery

Cameras, though, are one of the main reasons to buy the A7.

The main one has a 24Mp sensor and along with the ‘depth lens’ allows you to control depth of field. Basically, it’s a workaround for having a fixed aperture and lets you adjust the blurriness (bokeh) of the background.

The third lens is a 120? wide-angle attached to an 8Mp sensor. Around the front is another 24Mp camera for selfies.

It has an adjustable flash and has ‘Selfie Focus’ which is a way to get blurry backgrounds with just one front camera.

Selfies can also be shot with Pro Lighting Mode, and there’s support for AR emoji.
