Christopher Nolan, Rian Johnson and Others Sign Letters Urging Warner Bros. to Save FilmStruck

The service is scheduled to be discontinued on November 29.

Several prominent filmmakers are taking the case to save FilmStruck directly to Warner Bros. in a series of letters. The first letter, which was sent on November 12 to Warner Bros. Picture Group chairman Toby Emmerich, acknowledges that Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg have already contacted Warner Media Group to voice their support for continuing the streaming service.

“So we want to add our names to the petition started by Marty and Steven and want you (and Warners) to know that we feel equally strongly and would do anything to support the service being saved,” the letter states.

Exit Theatre Mode

Signatories include Paul Thomas Anderson, Guillermo del Toro, Leonardo DiCaprio, Rian Johnson and Christopher Nolan, among others. According to Deadline, a second letter has since been addressed to Turner and Warner Bros. Digital Networks in support of saving FilmStruck.

“While we understand that ‘business’ has always been a part of ‘show business,’ we would hope that if FilmStruck cannot be continued in its present form, it would be allowed to function until such a time as a suitable, and suitably robust, replacement can be launched,” the letter reads in part.

Exit Theatre Mode

Signatories for the second letter include David Oyelowo, Sofia Coppola and Freida Pinto, among others. FilmStruck, which is scheduled to be shut down on November 29, hosts over 1,800 classic, arthouse and foreign films on its streaming service. The decision to shutter FilmStruck comes as a result of AT&T’s acquisition of Time Warner and its attempts to streamline WarnerMedia.

AT&T recently announced plans to launch its own subscription streaming service in 2019.
