Shenmue 3 Crowdfunding Closed at Over $7 Million

£7,179,510 to be exact.

Shenmue 3 has ended its crowdfunding campaign by raising a grand total of £7,179,510 USD through the help of 81,087 backers. Announced in an update on Kickstarter, this amount was achieved above and beyond its original Kickstarter campaign, which raised £6,333,295 after setting a goal of just £2 million. When the Kickstarter ended back in 2015, it became the most funded game ever on the crowdfunding site.

Shenmue series creator Yu Suzuki, however, was not content with the amount raised and continued looking for further ways to help make this project live up to his vision.

He even re-opened the Kickstarter via Paypal through what was described as a “Slacker Backer period.” Shenmue 3 will be the third game in a series that began on Sega Dreamcast in 1999. The first two titles in the series, Shenmue I & II, were recently re-released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. While the re-releases were very similar to the originals, a much more comprehensive remake was in the works, but was unfortunately cancelled due to “budget constraints and development delays.”

At Gamescom 2018, Shenmue 3 publisher Deep Silver announced that the long-awaited game that was revealed at E3 2015 during PlayStation’s press conference will be released on August 27, 2019 for PS4 and PC.
