AMD's 7nm Radeon Card Arrives in February for $699

LAS VEGAS–AMD’s 7-nanometer silicon will first arrive next month via a new Radeon gaming graphics card before coming to desktop-based CPUs in mid-2019.

AMD's 7nm Radeon Card Arrives in February for $699The new card, the Radeon VII, will launch on Feb.

7 for £699, AMD CEO Lisa Su during a Wednesday keynote here at CES. It’s been designed to let you run the latest games at a 4K screen resolution (3,840 by 2,160 pixels) with high frame rates.

AMD's 7nm Radeon Card Arrives in February for $699 The Radeon VII is the world’s first gaming GPU built with a 7nm manufacturing process, she said.

This allows AMD to more densely pack the transistors on the silicon, which can boost the chip’s performance and cut down on its energy consumption. The Radeon VII will give you about 25 percent more performance over older GPU technology when running on the same power, Su said. The upcoming GPU has also been built with 16GB of memory, 60 computer units running at speeds of up to 1.8GHz, and 1TB/s memory bandwidth.

To show off the card, AMD demoed the Radeon VII running the upcoming title Devil May Cry 5 at 4K resolution. The card ran the game 90 to 115 frames per second. AMD also dropped some benchmarks, showing that the GPU slightly outperforms Nvidia’s competing RTX 2080 gaming card, which sells for £699.

The company is also taking aim at Intel by bringing the 7nm technology to AMD’s third-generation Ryzen processors for PC desktops. During the keynote, AMD’s CEO demonstrated what the silicon can do compared against an unspecified Intel chip: it performed a little better in the benchmarking, but used about 30 percent less power.

AMD's 7nm Radeon Card Arrives in February for $699 AMD’s CEO didn’t mention when the 7nm silicon will arrive for laptop-based CPUs.

But the new chip releases will put pressure on Intel and Nvidia, both of which are still relying on older chip-manufacturing processes to build their existing products.

Intel won’t come out with its 10-nm CPUs until at the end of this year, which could give AMD room throughout 2019 to grab sales from its long-time rival.

Expect to hear more AMD 7nm chip announcements as the year goes on, Su said.
