OnePlus 7 Pro 5G phone features, rumours, news and release date

With 2019 being the year of 5G, many manufacturers are lining up 5G handsets – and OnePlus wants to be leading the charge.

The company shared some minor details about the handset at Mobile World Congress 2019, confirming that there would indeed be separate 4G and 5G devices, but since then we’ve learnt a lot more about the forthcoming handset.

Here’s everything we know about the OnePlus 5G phone so far.

OnePlus 7 Pro 5G release date and price

  • To be announced on 14 May
  • $200-$300 more than OnePlus 6T
  • Launches exclusively on EE

OnePlus said in 2018 that it would be one of the first manufacturers to release a 5G smartphone in 2019 joining Samsung, Xiaomi and LG among others. EE is confirmed to be the network provider in the UK to support the device, where it will first be available.

An event has been scheduled for the launch of the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro on 14 May – and it’s expected that the 5G handset will also be announced at the same time. The availability will likely depend on EE’s 5G network launch plans – and all we have so far is “summer 2019”. We’d expect the 5G handset to then be available on other networks too.

In terms of price Pete Lau, co-founder of OnePlus, said the OnePlus 5G model is estimated to cost between $200 to $300 more than the OnePlus 6T, which starts at £499.

At Mobile World Congress, OnePlus suggested a sub-$1000 price point, but wouldn’t be drawn on an exact figure. The Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G is confirmed to be €599, which sets an aggressively low price for next-gen handsets.

OnePlus 7 Pro 5G design

  • Version of the OnePlus 7 Pro
  • Pop-up front camera expected

The OnePlus 5G phone was shown off in a large plastic case at Mobile World Congress, the first glimpse of this phone in the flesh. Previously, when OnePlus teased the phone, a device was shown with a tear-drop front camera notch, although we think this was just a development device for 5G.

In March 2019 a significant leak from @onleaks provided information about OnePlus’ plans, saying that there would be three handsets – the OnePlus 7, the OnePlus 7 Pro and the OnePlus 7 Pro 5G. That corroborates with information from OnePlus on the record, saying that the 5G phone wouldn’t be wildly different to the 4G model. In this case, it looks like the 5G handset is going to be a version of the OnePlus 7 Pro (leaving the OnePlus 7 as a cheaper device).

That broadly matches the approach of Oppo – OnePlus’ sibling company – with the Reno.

The display is said to be 6.64-inches, while the pop-up selfie camera keeps that display clear. It’s said that the display will curve towards the edges and that there’s a triple camera system on the rear. As for the colours or other design elements, those remain to be seen.

OnePlus 5G hardware

  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 platform
  • Snapdragon X50 5G modem
  • 6.64-inch 90Hz display

Starting with what we know, the OnePlus 7 5G will sit on Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 hardware and it will have the X50 5G modem – we know that much because it was confirmed at Mobile World Congress. Outside of that, leaks suggest at least 6GB RAM and 128GB of storage – although we wouldn’t be surprised to see these jump for the 5G handset.

There’s said to be a 6.64-inch display and OnePlus has already made a great deal of the “smooth” 90Hz refresh rate that’s going to be introduced on the OnePlus 7 Pro model. The OnePlus 7 Pro has also been awarded an A+ by DisplayMate, suggesting it’s pretty good – and also confirming that it’s an OLED display.

We’d also expect that OnePlus will stick to the 30W Warp Charge system introduced with the McLaren Edition handset in 2018 and we’re not expecting wireless charging. The battery is said to be 4000mAh – and seeing as the Oppo Reno 5G battery is 4065mAh, we expect it to be the same cell.

OnePlus 7 Pro 5G cameras

  • Triple camera system
  • 48-megapixel main camera
  • 3x optical zoom

Aside from the pop-up front camera that’s perhaps going to be the most talked about aspect of the OnePlus 7 Pro 5G camera system, we’re expecting the cameras on the 5G model to be the same as those on the 7 Pro. OnePlus has already shown off sketches with a triple camera system in place – and have started some early demos with the new zoom.

The OnePlus 7 Pro is going to have a 3x optical zoom lens and while that won’t break much ground compared to some rivals, it should be well received. It’s said that the main camera is a 48-megapixel sensor, using pixel combining for a 12-megapixel final image. So far, OnePlus is treading a well-worn path.

Exactly what the final camera will be remains to be seen. Will it be a “detail” sensor or will it be more useful, like a wide-angle camera? If OnePlus is going to be pushing up the price of this phone, it’s going to need to compete with some of the more fully-feature devices out there.

We’ll update with more details as they become known.
