It Chapter Two Comic Con Footage Reveals Iconic Losers' Club Scene

New footage from It Chapter Two was screened at ScareDiego — New Line Cinema and Warner Bros.’ horror-themed kick-off event to San Diego Comic-Con — on Wednesday night, providing press and attendees with their first look at the second trailer for the film as well as three scary scenes from the sequel to the 2017 blockbuster. (The second trailer drops Thursday at 9am PT.)

Moderator Conan O’Brien introduced director Andy Muschietti and the cast playing the adult versions of the Losers’ Club: James McAvoy (Bill), Jessica Chastain (Beverly), Bill Hader (Richie), Isaiah Mustafa (Mike), Jay Ryan (Ben), James Ransone (Eddie), and Andy Bean (Stanley).Muschietti proceeded to reveal three scenes from It Chapter Two … and they didn’t disappoint in getting under one’s skin. Per the studio (and Conan!), I’m going to be very mindful of SPOILERS.

The first scene shown was the Chinese restaurant scene, which fans of the book and the original TV miniseries will remember well. Muschietti revealed that this was the first sequence the cast shot so the characters becoming reacquainted with each other mirrored the actors getting to know each other.

Since Mike is the only character to have stayed in Derry, Maine, all these years, he’s also the only one to fully retain his memories of their childhood encounters with It. Obviously, the other characters’ return home brings back these repressed memories and fear of Pennywise.

Muschietti explained that if the first film was about childhood friendship then this one is about dealing with childhood trauma and survivor’s guilt. Those aspects were present in each of three scenes shown exclusively at ScareDiego.

The second scene shown is set at a carnival. Bill is chasing after a young boy — who now lives in the house Bill grew up in — in the hopes of preventing him from becoming Pennywise’s next victim. Bill follows the kid into a funhouse of mirrors which soon turns into a claustrophobic trap. And, yes, Pennywise does indeed show up to terrifying effect.

The third and final scene shown takes place at the Neibolt house. It had a lot of direct callbacks to the first film — as well as one helluva an ’80s horror classic Easter egg that Hader referred to as “a total nerd shout-out.”

The filmmakers are believed to have used upwards of 4,500 gallons of fake blood for a third act sequence involving Bev. Chastain, who grew up watching horror movies with her mom, said she wanted to make this set-piece “Carrie on steroids” and recalled the ordeal of being covered head-to-toe in freezing cold blood. (Because the fake blood has sugar in it, it can’t be heated because it would ferment — and smell like puke, McAvoy explained.)

The presentation also revealed that scenes in Chapter Two featuring the younger versions of the Losers’ Club will largely be scenes we didn’t see in the first film because the adult characters’ don’t remember them. Fans of the book may suspect what the nature of those forgotten memories are but the panel wasn’t saying.
