Christian Bale On Joining the MCU: ‘I Had To Ask What That Was’ – IGN
Christian Bale, who’s set to play Gorr the God Butcherer in Taika Waititi’s Thor: Love and Thunder, admitted he had no idea what the Marvel Cinematic Universe was before joining the film’s cast.
The actor revealed how he stayed in the dark on all matters MCU in the latest issue of Total Film. Bale was asked about any qualms he may have had upon taking on another comic-book role following his portrayal of Bruce Wayne/Batman in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy, which he was quick to dismiss.
“Absolutely not, no. That didn’t even enter into my head at all,” he said. “I’d read that, and people would go, ‘Oh, look at this! He’s entered the MCU!’ And I’d go, ‘I’ve done what? I haven’t entered sh*t, thank you very much.’ I’m like, ‘The MCU?’ I had to ask what that was.”
It’s unclear whether the actor was referring to Disney’s collection of Marvel films as a whole or just the meaning of the acronym itself, but the fact he had to ask shows that not all of Hollywood’s top talent is well versed in the lingo — even if they’ve donned superhero capes in the past.
The interview also goes into Bale’s inspiration for his take on the villain, as well as how director Taika Waititi eased Bale’s nerves when he told him his interpretation of the character wouldn’t “run[s] around in a G-string all the time,” something Bale thought he’d have to do for his portrayal after Googling his character’s comic appearances.
But even Bale is skeptical of what Waititi will do in post-production. “I always did think what he could do with this in front of a bluescreen – he could chuck on whatever he wants later on,” he said.
The new issue of Total Film will hit shelves on Thursday, June 23, and in the meantime, check out IGN’s full breakdown of Bale’s character, Gorr the God Butcher.
